This work depicts the landscape of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
In the 19th century, it was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and flourished as a home port for whaling vessels.
People from Japan and other countries around the world came to live and work there.
After World War II, it thrived as a center of marine art along with the development of the tourism industry.
However, most of the community was burned down in the great wildfire that struck in August 2023.
Yuki Harada engaged in research activities based on Lahaina, and produced this work while envisioning the Lahaina of the distant future.
